It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing of Samuel James Serpico, who left this world on the evening of January 20, 2026, peacefully in the arms of his loving parents, Sara and James Serpico. Samuel, affectionately known as Sammy, was born on January 10, 2026, weighing 8lbs 2oz and measuring 22 inches. Though his time with us was brief, his impact was profound, and he will forever be cherished in the hearts of all who knew him.
From the moment he entered this world, Sammy displayed a remarkable spirit. Even in the womb, he was a fighter, shown through his tiny raised fist in every ultrasound image. His parents fondly recall how he would respond to his father’s singing with energetic kicks, a sign of the joy he found in music. Once born, Sammy loved the quiet moments spent stretching with his mother and listening to his father’s gentle voice as he read stories.
Sammy carried pieces of both his parents—his mother’s eyes and lips, and his father’s height and ears—making him a beautiful blend of their love. Those who met him could see the perfection in his being, a precious child who had already touched so many lives with his presence.
Sadly, after his birth, Sammy became unresponsive. Following extensive evaluation in the NICU, he was diagnosed with nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH), a rare and severe metabolic disorder. This condition, which causes seizures, sleep-like symptoms, and impaired breathing, has no known treatment, and Sammy’s family was faced with unimaginable grief. Despite his challenges, Sammy showed an immense amount of strength and courage, enduring more than most. Surrounded by the love and prayers of his family, he is now resting in the arms of Jesus, free from pain and struggle.
Sammy is survived by his devoted parents, Sara and James Serpico, and a wide circle of family and friends who will always hold his memory close. He may have been with us for a brief time, but his spirit and the love he brought will never be forgotten.
A visitation will be held on Monday, February 2nd, from 10 am – 1 pm at America’s Keswick (Activity Center Gymnasium), located at 601 Route 530, Whiting, NJ 08759, followed by a funeral service from 1 pm – 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the University of Colorado Foundation, supporting research in the fight to cure NKH. Donations can be sent to:
