It is with profound sadness and disbelief that we mourn the loss of Councillor Waseem Zafar, a respected political figure, a passionate advocate for clean air, and a dear friend to many. Waseem’s sudden passing has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him, and the news has sent shockwaves through the Birmingham community and beyond.

Waseem was not only a devoted Councillor at Birmingham City Council but also the founder of the Clean Air Justice Network, where he dedicated his time and efforts to advocating for environmental justice and better air quality for all. His tireless work in improving his community and raising awareness about environmental issues earned him the respect of colleagues, constituents, and advocates alike. Waseem’s passion for making the world a better place was evident in everything he did, and his legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of political leaders and activists.

His academic background, having studied BSc (Hons) Logistics at Aston University, reflected his commitment to creating positive change through thoughtful planning and action. As one of his colleagues said, they had planned to call him soon to joke about Birmingham’s Cycle Lane (a shared inside joke), and now, with deep sorrow, they must say goodbye instead. Originally from Dadyal, Azad Kashmir, Waseem was the nephew of the late Raja Kamal Khan, a prominent figure in the region, and cousin to Raja Noman Kamal, Joint Secretary of the Pakistan Muslim League. His legacy lives on not just in his political work but also in the countless lives he touched personally.
