Born in Nagasaki, Japan, Yamashita began studying guitar at the tender age of eight under the guidance of his father, Toru Yamashita, and composer Kojiro Kobune. From these early lessons, his prodigious talent became evident, and by his mid-teens, he had already won major competitions in both Japan and Europe, becoming the youngest-ever winner of several leading international guitar competitions—a testament to his exceptional skill and determination.
Yamashita’s career was defined by bold innovation and technical mastery. He became widely known for his daring transcriptions, most famously his 1980 recording of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, which brought him international acclaim and introduced audiences worldwide to a new vision of what the classical guitar could achieve. Throughout his career, he released more than 100 recordings, spanning works by Bach, Sor, Villa-Lobos, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, and many others.
