The Bryant University community is mourning an immeasurable loss following a tragic wrong-way crash on Route 146 that claimed the lives of two cherished students, Jaylin Rainford and Chiemelie David Okonkwo, both juniors whose lives were taken far too soon. The devastating accident, which occurred shortly after midnight, has sent shockwaves through campus and beyond, leaving family, friends, classmates, and faculty united in grief.
According to the Rhode Island State Police, emergency calls were received reporting a vehicle traveling the wrong direction on Route 146. The investigation determined that a pickup truck, traveling southbound in the northbound high-speed lane, struck an oncoming vehicle head-on. Both vehicles were engulfed in flames, resulting in the deaths of the two Bryant students and the driver of the other vehicle. The tragedy has deeply impacted the university community, prompting an outpouring of sorrow and remembrance.
Jaylin Rainford, of Randolph, Massachusetts, was known as a dedicated student, a committed member of the Bryant track team, and a respected Resident Assistant. He was admired for his leadership, discipline, and genuine care for others, serving as a role model to his peers and residents. Jaylin’s presence on campus reflected his strong character and desire to uplift those around him.
Chiemelie David Okonkwo, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, was equally influential within the Bryant community. He was deeply engaged with the PWC Center and student organizations, serving as Director of Black Enterprises for the Multicultural Student Union and as President of Shades of Strength. David’s passion for advocacy, leadership, and empowerment left a lasting impact on campus life, inspiring many through his dedication and vision.
